What's the difference between vegan and vegetarian?

I have noticed that there seems to be some confusion between the terms vegan and vegetarian, even among those who choose the lifestyle. Some don't realize the two terms are different, some say they're vegetarian when they're actually vegan and vise versa. I find this to be very frustrating, although, even as a teenager myself, I thought the term "vegan" was just short for "vegetarian." So I'm not the only one who used to have this misconception.

A vegan is simply someone who doesn't eat animal products. Period. No cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, milk, cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, butter or ANYTHING with ANY animal byproducts in them (there are some foods that actually have bone and hoofs in them to give certain foods a jelly like texture.... ewww!). Many go so far as not buy products and avoid companies that have tested on animals, use animal products in them and that are generally better for the environment. It's a very strict diet.

A Vegetarian is someone who doesn't entirely eliminate animal products from their diet and aren't nearly as strict as vegans. Many vegetarian's may try to eat USDA organic or free range type animal products as much as possible, to try and look out for the welfare of animals on some level.

  • Lacto-ovo-vegetarians eat both dairy products and eggs; this is the most common type of vegetarian diet.
  • Lacto-vegetarians eat dairy products but avoid eggs.
  • Ovo-vegetarian. Eats eggs but not dairy products.
  • Pescetarians eat seafood
Even with this simple distinction between these two diet choices, it can be difficult to know exactly what someone means when they say that they are vegan or vegetarian. If you are having them over for a dinner party or a BBQ, simply ask them to clarify. Some vegetarians can be just as strict as Vegans. Many people won't mind if you ask them if you explain where you're coming from. Ask them to send you a couple recipe's that you can make or make the dinner a pot luck style to make sure that everyone has something that they can eat and enjoy. If you do not want to ask, simply just look up some recipe's and don't include any animal products in that dinner. There are many alternatives for cheese, butter and other animal substitutes that are very yummy!

When it comes to gift giving, as I stated above, some vegan's and vegetarian's are very animal and earth conscious. If you aren't sure what to get him or her, simply ask for some guidelines. What company should I go with? Is it O.K. if I give you a gift card to a certain store? What would you like to receive? You need to also be upfront with what your budget is. Most people will be respectful and understand because allot of people aren't made out of money.

Personally, I would rather get a gift card because I know it's difficult to buy for people sometimes. I don't see it as "oh I'm too lazy to figure out what I should get you." I see it as "I'm not sure what to get you but I want to give you something." I don't see it as a bad thing at all. Anyway, that is besides the point. It can all be very confusing for non- vegans and vegetarian's as it is for those who have chosen the lifestyle. The biggest thing you need to do is just ask questions and do some research.

The start of a "fat" vegan's journey

About 3 months ago, I became vegan because of some health issues I've been having. About a year and a half ago, I was admitted to the hospital because I was having a severe gallbladder attack, towards the end of my hospital visit (I was in the hospital for 6 days), I was physically feeling better, so, the surgeon refused to remove my gallbladder. Once discharged, I was still sick on a daily basis. I was vomiting at least once a day and I was eating very minimally and lost about 50 pounds. I was still eating animal products on a regular basis, which I now believe is what was making me feel sick.

I switched to a vegan diet because I found that I wasn't feeling sick on a daily basis and kneeling over the porcelain throne every night. Plus, I was tired of trying to work with my insurance and doctors to try and get my gallbladder removed. Am I still trying to work with my health insurance and primary care doctor to remove my gallbladder? Yes AND it's a less pressing issue because I'm not putting things into my body that my system can't handle digesting.

I have found that once I got going on learning new recipes and having a few staple recipes that I cook regularly and having a good variety nutritionally, I am saving some money by skipping the animal products when I'm grocery shopping. I don't miss any of it to be honest. I'm not going to deny the fact when I see something that I think LOOKS yummy but that doesn't mean I WANT it. I hear allot of people say that they "don't know how" to cook vegan dishes. I have a simple answer. Google. Use the internet, there's a reason we have it at our fingertips. There are facebook groups galore and countless vegan cookbooks and blogs. You don't ALWAYS have to buy USDA organic either. If you can't afford it, the "regular" stuff still is very nutritional.

Another reason I switched to this lifestyle is because I want to lessen animal suffering and lower my negative impact on the planet. I'm only one person you say? Honestly? Assuming I live to 80, in the next 52.5 years, I can make a dent in lowering my impact, even if it's just a little bit.

I'm not going to just talk about my diet in this blog, I'm going to talk about many aspects of how I choose to live. reduce, reuse, Recycling, how I clean my house and much more.

Sally Hansen Airbrush legs lotion review

A few days ago, Sally Hansen sent me their Airbrush Legs lotion to try and to give my honest opinion of the product. I'm personally on the fence about this product. My first thought was "Why not just wear some tights if you want your legs to look flawless?" and "Why not just go get a spray tan?" Then sitting on the idea of this product for a couple days, I thought that there might be something to this product, so I gave it a shot. Especially since my legs are super pale and can blind anyone if you saw them. Just as a note, this is not a self tanner lotion, this is quite literally, leg makeup. So it's good if you haven't had a chance to get out and go to the beach and need some quick color for your legs.

The color that I received was medium. As I put a little lotion in my hands, I thought to myself that it was going to be too dark for me but as I put it on, I found that the color evened out really well and gave good coverage and color. Consider it almost a BB cream for your leg in a sense. It really gives a natural color in my mind. That is if you can get the product blended out enough before it dries. Maybe it's because of the "waterproof" aspect that the product has that makes it dry so quick but that's my only complaint is that it dries too fast to, which makes it hard to blend out and make the coverage even. I've read other reviews that say it comes out of the bottle "messy" but I don't find that personally. It goes on really smoothly...until it dries at least.

I was looking on the sally hansen website and they do have a spray version if this product and I have a feeling that works a bit better than the lotion version I received. I can see why they have both on the market. Some people probably prefer one over the other. It took me a fair amount of effort to get an even coat of this product on my legs and I would really like to try the spray version of this to see if it's any easier to work with.

Leakycon 2014

This past week, I went to Leakycon 2014 in Orlando, Fl. It was a blast! I loved seeing so many people cosplaying as their favorite characters. I am amazed at how much time some people put into their costumes and how great they look. There were so many fantastic and interesting panels as well. Many good discussions happened this week in the panels. I may go again in the future but for next year, I'm planning on going back to vidcon since I haven't been able to go the last 2 years. In the meantime, here are some vlogs that I uploaded from my leakycon experience. :-) Enjoy!

Saturday, July 26, 2014

Well, hello. Here's a blog that I hardly ever post on. Why you ask? I have no clue. It just feels weird to me at the moment to even be writing a blog because with blogger or even tumblr, you can't make these posts private to where only your friends can see them. Which I feel is very odd. If that's a strange way of thinking then so be it. I journal every day and I talk to my best friend on a daily basis, mainly via text and skype every few days. I post pictures on my facebook and instagram of important events. Sometimes I even vlog and post it on youtube to share. I'm spread across so many social media sites including facebook, twitter, tumblr, instagram, myspace, google plus, youtube and pinterest, that I never focus my thoughts in one place.

I admit, I don't have much of a social life at the moment. I like to hide behind my computer screen or have my face in a book. Probably more so than most. Gotta love social anxiety! I try and get out every once in a while but it's hard for me to do. I find myself making plans and then making an excuse as to why I can't go. This is something I'm trying to work on. I see my therapist twice a week and she is absolutely fantastic. I'm not agoraphobic because I'm able to go to the grocery store, ride the bus and travel. Just social interaction isn't my strong suite.

I may or may not post here more. I'm not sure yet. I used to blog frequently when myspace was popular but I fell out of the habit and never got back into it. I used to post on livejournal a lot more as well but haven't logged on in months. I'd like to write about my experiences thus far with my mental health issues. Although I'm wary about revealing personal information on any public forum. Especially with past trauma that I've had. I just want to help educate others. I don't claim to be a mental health professional though. I've considered vlogging about it on my youtube channel but it's difficult me to express myself verbally and I'm more confident in regards to writing than I am speaking.

"True Haunting" By Edwin F. Becker

I just finished reading "True Haunting" By Edwin F. Becker and I have to say I found it very interesting to read. While it's easy and quick to read, it is very well written; the fear and frustration that Ed and Marsha Becker experienced while dealing with the home that the bought is clear. If you would like to read into what the book is about, please click here.

While the story is primarily told from Ed's side (considering he is the author of the book), he expresses Marsha's experiences and fear very well. I think that the book is very well written and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in researching the paranormal or is having something going on in their home. This book shows the struggles a family can have in regards to coming out to family and/ or friends about their home possibly being haunted. Sure we see people on TV with haunted homes and business' but these TV shows never really discuss or show the struggle of having to find help or come out to family or the comments of people saying that you are crazy and you're just getting used to living in your new home. While I do believe that in most cases paranormal experience IS just a case of getting used to a new place or not thinking through logical explanations. If there are allot of power lines near your home, the energy from that can affect the human brain and body and cause paranormal activity (it can also increase activity as well if the home truly is haunted). Also, if there is a carbon monoxide leak somewhere in your home or business, that can also cause people to believe that are having paranormal experiences.

One of the things that got me thinking in this book is that the exorcism that was performed on the home at the time had failed. Mainly because exorcisms don't work on spirits, they only work on demons. While there was supposedly an evil entity at this home, that doesn't mean that it was a demon. I took notice that at this time, at least according to the book, the beckers never tried to rid the ghosts other than with the exorcism, which by today's standards (at least in my mind) is kind of odd. While I do think that there are spirits that can't be driven out of a home (although I don't think it's always necessary), I find it interesting that the Becker's didn't try another route in regards to ridding the home of the spirits. The paranormal was still very taboo at this time and wasn't openly discussed as it is today though. So it is very possible that the paranormal investigation team they had in to look at the home didn't know any other way of ridding the home because it's possible the team had no one else to consult with and brainstorm other ideas. Paranormal investigation has come along way both in regards to research and becoming more socially acceptable, especially over the last 10 years than it did at the time the Becker's were having their experiences. While there is still a lot of disagreements and misunderstandings, it is a lot easier to figure out how to deal with paranormal activity in your home today.

Collective unconsciousness

The idea of a universal mind (or universal consciousness or collective consciousness or Collective unconscious) is a fascinating subject to me. The universal mind is the universal higher consciousness where we subconsciously connect with other beings around the world.  Collectively, as humans, we can predict when almost any type of major event is going to happen.

When I was at a paranormal event with the Paranormal Research Society a couple of months ago, tech specialist, Sergey Poberezhny was discussing the concept of collective unconsciousness with us and was talking about something called the “Random Event Generator (REG),” which is supposed to help us explore the direct impact of consciousness on the physical world. Research has been done for over a decade now with the REG and there are currently over 60 active eggs in the network in areas including Europe, the US, Canada, India, Fiji, New Zealand, Japan, China, Russia, Brazil, Africa, Thailand, South America, Australia. The hypothesis is that the REG will show some sort of anomaly deviations associated with major global events when there’s major participation or some sort of major reaction to the event; such as 9/11.

While the REG basically flips 200 coins a second to generate random numbers on the graph, it is supposedly affected by the collective unconscious to help “predict” the future. While I personally doubt that a piece of technology can really predict the future and some of the studies have been very far off, I do think that as creatures on this earth, both human and otherwise are connected somehow subconsciously.

I think that this concept of a universal mind plays into people having psychic abilities as well as religion and spirituality; which I believe the paranormal and religion/ spirituality go hand in hand. As I have sat down and thought through the concept of collective unconsciousness, my thought process lead me to this hypothesis; so many people believe in an almighty God, Gods or some sort of higher being that is separate from humans. That there is some big, invisible God out there in the universe that we can’t hear, see, smell or touch but what if WE are God? In theory, I think collectively as humans, we are God because according to many faiths, God is everywhere, in everything and (from what I learned in Sunday school as a child) is IN us.

This is just a theory I have but please feel free to discuss and disagree with me down in the comments below.
I was discussing this with a friend of mine and she told me about this story on tumblr. I don’t know who wrote it and I do not take credit for this story, but it gets the point that I’m trying to make across. Please don’t feel like I’m trying to change your beliefs in any way, because I’m not. You just cannot talk about the paranormal, without talking about spirituality.

You were on your way home when you died.

It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me.
And that’s when you met me.

“What… what happened?” You asked. “Where am I?”

“You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words.

“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…”

“Yup,” I said.

“I… I died?”

“Yup. But don’t feel bad about it. Everyone dies,” I said.

You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” You asked.

“Is this the afterlife?”

“More or less,” I said.

“Are you god?” You asked.

“Yup,” I replied. “I’m God.”

“My kids… my wife,” you said.

“What about them?”

“Will they be all right?”

“That’s what I like to see,” I said. “You just died and your main concern is for your family. That’s
good stuff right there.”

You looked at me with fascination. To you, I didn’t look like God. I just looked like some man. Or possibly a woman. Some vague authority figure, maybe. More of a grammar school teacher than the almighty.

“Don’t worry,” I said. “They’ll be fine. Your kids will remember you as perfect in every way. They didn’t have time to grow contempt for you. Your wife will cry on the outside, but will be secretly relieved. To be fair, your marriage was falling apart. If it’s any consolation, she’ll feel very guilty for feeling relieved.”

“Oh,” you said. “So what happens now? Do I go to heaven or hell or something?”

“Neither,” I said. “You’ll be reincarnated.”

“Ah,” you said. “So the Hindus were right,”

“All religions are right in their own way,” I said. “Walk with me.”

You followed along as we strode through the void. “Where are we going?”

“Nowhere in particular,” I said. “It’s just nice to walk while we talk.”

“So what’s the point, then?” You asked. “When I get reborn, I’ll just be a blank slate, right? A
baby. So all my experiences and everything I did in this life won’t matter.”

“Not so!” I said. “You have within you all the knowledge and experiences of all your past lives. You just don’t remember them right now.”

I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Your soul is more magnificent, beautiful, and gigantic than you can possibly imagine. A human mind can only contain a tiny fraction of what you are. It’s like sticking your finger in a glass of water to see if it’s hot or cold. You put a tiny part of yourself into the vessel, and when you bring it back out, you’ve gained all the experiences it had.
“You’ve been in a human for the last 48 years, so you haven’t stretched out yet and felt the rest of your immense consciousness. If we hung out here for long enough, you’d start remembering everything. But there’s no point to doing that between each life.”

“How many times have I been reincarnated, then?”

“Oh lots. Lots and lots. An in to lots of different lives.” I said. “This time around, you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.”

“Wait, what?” You stammered. “You’re sending me back in time?”

“Well, I guess technically. Time, as you know it, only exists in your universe. Things are different where I come from.”

“Where you come from?” You said.

“Oh sure,” I explained “I come from somewhere. Somewhere else. And there are others like me. I know you’ll want to know what it’s like there, but honestly you wouldn’t understand.”

“Oh,” you said, a little let down. “But wait. If I get reincarnated to other places in time, I could have interacted with myself at some point.”

“Sure. Happens all the time. And with both lives only aware of their own lifespan you don’t even know it’s happening.”

“So what’s the point of it all?”

“Seriously?” I asked. “Seriously? You’re asking me for the meaning of life? Isn’t that a little stereotypical?”

“Well it’s a reasonable question,” you persisted.
I looked you in the eye. “The meaning of life, the reason I made this whole universe, is for you to mature.”

“You mean mankind? You want us to mature?”

“No, just you. I made this whole universe for you. With each new life you grow and mature and become a larger and greater intellect.”

“Just me? What about everyone else?”

“There is no one else,” I said. “In this universe, there’s just you and me.”
You stared blankly at me. “But all the people on earth…”

“All you. Different incarnations of you.”

“Wait. I’m everyone!?”

“Now you’re getting it,” I said, with a congratulatory slap on the back.

“I’m every human being who ever lived?”

“Or who will ever live, yes.”

“I’m Abraham Lincoln?”

“And you’re John Wilkes Booth, too,” I added.

“I’m Hitler?” You said, appalled.

“And you’re the millions he killed.”

“I’m Jesus?”

“And you’re everyone who followed him.”

You fell silent.

“Every time you victimized someone,” I said, “you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you’ve done, you’ve done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you.”

You thought for a long time.

“Why?” You asked me. “Why do all this?”

“Because someday, you will become like me. Because that’s what you are. You’re one of my kind. You’re my child.”

“Whoa,” you said, incredulous. “You mean I’m a god?”

“No. Not yet. You’re a fetus. You’re still growing. Once you’ve lived every human life throughout all time, you will have grown enough to be born.”

“So the whole universe,” you said, “it’s just…”

“An egg.” I answered. “Now it’s time for you to move on to your next life.”
And I sent you on your way.

Gypsy Herbal Astringent Lotion

I found this on facebook from a fan page that I like, I can't remember what the page is but I've been wanting to try this!

Home Beauty Treatments: Gypsy Herbal Astringent Lotion
This wonderful herbal astringent lotion has been hailed as the first herbal product ever produced and marketed. Legend has it that the early Gypsies formulated it and claimed it to be a cure-all. Whether or not it is I hardly know, but I do know that it is an excellent astringent for the face and a great rinse for dark hair.

This Gypsy herbal astringent lotion combines gentle common herbs in a masterful way, it’s easy to make, and it’s a versatile formula that serves many purposes. The Gypsies used it as a hair rinse, mouthwash, headache remedy, aftershave, footbath, and who knows what else! I have seen this formula sold in department stores in exotic little bottles for a fancy price. You can make it for the cost of a few herbs and a bottle of vinegar.

6 parts lemon balm
4 parts chamomile
4 parts roses
3 parts calendula
3 parts comfrey leaf
1 part lemon peel
1 part rosemary
1 part sage
Vinegar to cover (apple cider or wine vinegar)
Rose water or witch hazel extract
Essential oil of lavender or rose (optional)
Place the herbs in a widemouthed jar. Fill the jar with enough vinegar that it rises an inch or two above the herb mixture. Cover tightly and let it sit in a warm spot for 2 to 3 weeks.
Strain out the herbs. To each cup of herbal vinegar, add 2/3 to 1 cup of rose water or witch hazel. Add a drop or two of essential oil, if desired. Rebottle. This product does not need to be refrigerated and will keep indefinitely.

12 surprising uses for vicks vapor rub

Great to know!!
Be sure to Share so you will have it saved for future reference!!

Twelve Surprising Uses for Vicks VapoRub
1. Decongest Your Chest
The most common use of Vicks is to decongest your chest and throat area. When applied to the upper chest, it provides excellent relief of cough and congestion symptoms.

2. On Your Tootsies
Applying Vicks to your feet provides nighttime cough relief. Generously rub VapoRub all over your feet and cover them with socks. Your cough will subside.

3. Achy Breaky Muscles
Vicks relieves sore, overworked muscles. It increases circulation and provides almost instant aid. Use a generous portion and apply it over the aching area.

4. Get Rid of Nasty Nail Fungus
Rub VapoRub on your toenails if you suspect you have a fungus. Within days, the nail will turn dark—this means the Vicks is killing the fungus. As your toenail grows out, the dark part will grow off and you will have fungus-free feet. Keep applying the ointment over a period of two weeks to fully cleanse nail beds of any remaining bacteria.

5. Stop Your Cat from Scratching
To prevent Miss Kitty from ruining your doors, walls, and windows, apply a small amount of VapoRub to these areas. Cats detest the smell and will steer clear. Vicks can also be applied to your arms and legs if your kitty is prone to scratching you.

6. Pet Pee-Pee Deterrent
If your dog or cat is not yet potty trained, put an open bottle of Vicks on the area he or she likes to mark as their territory. The smell will discourage them from lifting their legs and wetting your rug.

7. Headaches Be Gone
Rub a small amount of Vicks VapoRub on your temples and forehead to help relieve headaches. The mentholated scent will release pressure in your head and instantly relieve pain.

8. Humidify Your Sleep
Vicks VapoRub can be used in special types of humidifiers and vaporizers. Ensure your humidifier has an aromatherapy compartment before using. The humidifier will circulate Vicks throughout the air and keep you breathing easy all night long.

9. Paper Cuts and Splinters
To prevent infection and speed up healing time, dab a small amount of Vicks on any small cut or splinter.

10. Ticks and Bugs
If you get bitten by a tick, apply Vicks immediately. The strong odor might help get the critter to release itself and stop bugging you.

11. Reek-free Racehorses
Professional racers smother VapoRub under the nostrils of racehorses on race day. The strong stench deters the stallions from the alluring odor of the female pony and keeps them focused on the race.

12. Go Away Mosquitoes
Apply small dabs of Vicks VapoRub to your skin and clothes and mosquitoes will steer clear. If you do get bitten, apply Vicks to the area and cover it with a Band-Aid to relieve itching.

My confirmation and Dealing with my sexuality

If you haven't seen any of my vlogs on youtube or read any of my previous blog posts, I have been in the process of converting to Catholicism and this past Saturday, the day before easter, I was confirmed and had my first communion (well, my first communion in the catholic church). It was a very positive and moving experience for me. My mom came, which meant a lot to me. The Easter Vigil service was a night I have been looking forward to for several months.

The process was actually very difficult for me personally because there are things the Catholic church believes that I disagree with and it has taken a lot of praying, studying, really thinking about what I believed and why I believed these things. I didn't want to just take what my deacons and priest said as an end all be all and have that be it. I wanted to understand why the catholic church followed and believed certain things. Although the learning process never ends and I am still doing research. I have found that it has taken more soul searching than anything and realizing who I am as a person. Because of this process, I have started becoming more comfortable with who I am.

One of the things that I have started to come to terms with is my sexuality. At the age of 14, I started to realize that I may be bisexual. Growing up, I think it was normal to be attracted to both boys and girls, I never thought about it but I never knew there were terms for being attracted to the same sex, opposite sex or even both sexes. Although in middle school, I learned that being attracted to the same sex was termed "gay" or "lesbian." Which I never gave a thought about. Once I hit high school though and I started becoming more involved with theatre and started going to booker high school for musical theatre, I started trying to figure out who I was and realized that it wasn't "normal" so to speak to be attracted to both men and women and that there was actually a name for it. Again, at this point though, I didn't really give it much thought until I was 16 when I started going to church and becoming more religious. At this point, I became afraid of "going to hell" and being judged by my peers, so I went back in the closet so to speak. So, if I had told anyone I was bisxual at this point, I started denying it until I was 19 when I started backing away from the church.

At this point, I was taking a class in college and started to re- realize my sexuality when I realized that I was attracted to another woman in my class. Over the next 4 years, while I had come out to several people, I never fully accepted myself for my sexuality and didn't know how to be ok with my faith and my sexuality. Part of me wanted to reject faith altogether because I knew I couldn't suppress my sexuality to myself any longer. Up until a year and a half ago, I read Ryan Buell's book "Paranormal State," where he briefly discussed his bisexuality and I watched all 5 seasons of paranormal state and admired how Ryan seemed to be comfortable with his sexuality and still be a practicing catholic. While Ryan isn't the only one I've admired in regards to this, I have several friends that are Christian and gay/ lesbian/ bisexual, I started to slowly come to terms with my faith and my sexuality and that it isn't a bad thing.

So, going back to the main point of this post, in regards to my faith and my own self discovery, these last few months have meant allot to me and my confirmation was basically a pivotal point in my spiritual journey.
